Carla Peña professional cello teacher in The Hague

Hi! I am Carla and I am an experienced cello teacher

I am a dedicated, enthousiast and patient teacher.

I started learning music when I was 4 years old and cello when at the age of 6. I developed a deep love for music  and that is what I share with my students. For that reason, I followed the minor in Music Education during my studies in The Royal Conservatoire of The Hague and created my own teaching studio.

I offer customized lessons to my students. In our lessons, we strive to inspire one another and focus on developing technical proficiency, musicality, body awareness and a greater understanding of music.

What are the lessons like?

in my lessons we will...

Get to know each other

We will do an introductory lesson to find the best teaching approach and to build a customized plan.

  • Which are your expectations?
  • Which music do you like?
  • Are you preparing for an audition?
Are you a complete beginner?

Then, we will learn how to read the notes. In the first lesson you will already be able to play some songs.

Learn in a friendly environment

We will work on cello technique to express yourself avoiding injuries by combining your favorite songs with cello methods.

In case of young beginners, we will do cello games to learn in a fun environment!

Play together

Playing with other musicians is very inspiring and enriching. We will always play duos in the lesson and you will have the opportunity, from time to time, to have lessons accompanied by a pianist.

Perform regularly!

Twice a year, I organise concerts for my students in my teaching space, Pandora Studio. Having a goal is the perfect way to finding motivation and learn.

Do you need a cello? I can help you get one!

You don't need to have a cello for the trial lesson. We can do it with mine! Afterwards, I will recommend you some stores where you can rent or buy one!

Lessons in different languages!

English, Spanish, Dutch, French, or Catalan.

What are the lessons like?

in our lessons we will…

Get to know each other

In the introductory lesson, we will discuss your learning goals and preferences in order to develop a customized teaching plan that is tailored to your needs.

Let me know your expectations, as well as any music or specific skills you are interested in focusing on.

Are you preparing for an audition or working towards a particular musical goal?

Are you a complete beginner?

Don’t worry! In the first lesson, I will teach you how to read musical notes. With a little practice, you will soon be able to play some songs on your own.

Learn in a friendly environment

Learn cello in a friendly and supportive environment with a focus on technique and injury prevention.
By combining your favorite songs with proven cello methods, you will be able to express yourself on the instrument while also developing good habits. For young beginners, we will play cello games and do other fun activities to make learning enjoyable and engaging.

Play together

Playing music with others can be incredibly inspiring and enriching. During lessons, we will play duets and, occasionally, you will have the opportunity to work with a pianist. Don't miss out on the chance to collaborate and grow as a musician through shared experiences with your peers!

Perform regularly!

Three times a year, I host concerts for my students (children and teenagers) at Pandora Studio as a way to motivate you and challenge you to learn and improve their skills. These events also provide a chance for you to showcase your hard work and talent to an audience. By setting and working towards a performance goal, you will be able to stay motivated and committed to your music practice.

For adults, I host 1 concert per year and group lessons.

FAQs

  • Do I need previous experience?

No. I teach both complete beginners and experienced cellists.

  • Do I need a cello for the first lesson?

You don’t need one for the trial lesson- even if it's recommended- I can provide it. Afterwards, I will recommend rental shops in The Hague and guide you through the process of getting the appropriate instrument.

  • Should I buy an instrument?

When you're a beginner, renting is the best option. It's better to buy an instrument later, when you have been playing for a longer time and have a more clear idea of which kind of instrument you are looking for.

  • My child is 5 years old. Is it too early to start?

Not at all! We’ll incorporate games to help maintain focus and make learning fun.

  • I don’t know how to read music.

No problem at all — we will learn it step by step together.

  • Where do the lessons take place?

At Pandora Studio, De Constant Rebecquestraat 3, The Hague. Accessible by trams 2, 3, 4, and 11. Free parking until 18h.

  • In which language are the lessons?

I teach in English, French, Spanish, Dutch, and Catalan.

  • How often should I have a lesson?

Weekly lessons are ideal for consistent progress and motivation. At this moment, I am only accepting students that have lessons every wee4k.

  • Is music theory also taught during the lessons?

Yes, it’s integrated into the lessons to help develop musical understanding and expression.

  • Are there recitals during the year?

Yes. Children and teens perform in 3 concerts per year (Dec – Mar – Jul); adults have 1 concert per year.

  • What happens if a student has to miss a lesson?

Cancellations are fine with at least 24 hours’ notice. Otherwise, the full fee is charged.

Testimonials

About two years ago, I decided to pick up the cello as a new instrument. Since then, I’ve been studying with Carla, who has given me a solid foundation in technique and valuable musical insight into the pieces I’ve played. Under her guidance, I’ve developed a deeper interest in the cello than I’ve ever had with any other instrument. Thanks to Carla’s expertise, I’ve discovered a passion I’ll likely carry for life. If you’re thinking about learning the cello, I highly recommend studying with Carla.

Guus

Carla is a great cello teacher. She selects music that helps build her student’s skills and technique. I love how she plays her cello with her students. Having a professional musician playing alongside gives an instant concert feel and is motivating for her students. My daughter looks forward to her lessons. We can highly recommend Carla.

Diana, Emma’s mother

I feel so lucky that I found Carla/Pandora Studio. She's an excellent teacher – kind and patient, but not afraid to push you a little – and obviously cares very much about her students. I always look forward to our lessons and feel motivated to practice what I've learned. Highly recommended.

Saskia

Naja was part of an orchestra in her school and she was learning cello very slowly, and was very unmotivated. In 3 lessons with Carla, she learned new notes, she started practicing every day and she started enjoying playing cello.  Carla has caused a positive impact in Naja.
